See Local Art the james michener art museum

It isn't often that works of art are curated within the walls of a jail. Thanks to the efforts of celebrated author James Michener, a Doylestown native, the former Bucks County Jail is now a world-class museum. Stroll the exhibits and enjoy a collection of Pennsylvania Impressionist paintings and special exhibits. A sculpture garden, landscaped courtyard, museum shop and café round out the experience.

FAQs

  • What is the story behind the museum's building?

The museum is housed in the facility that was once the Bucks County Jail. Thanks to philanthropic efforts of Pulitzer-prize winning author James Michener, the museum was completely renovated while preserving much of the original structure. The original prison walls still encompass the museum grounds, and visitors can tour preserved portions of the original jail.
  • Is there a place to eat at the museum?

The elegantly casual Museum Café is a great place to take a break during your visit. Enjoy hand-crafted farm-to-table fare that features seasonal specials, hearty sandwiches and delectable baked goods. Venture further afield and enjoy the many Doylestown restaurants and bistros within walking distance of the museum, many of whom have partnerships with the museum.
