US Independence Was Born at washington's crossing historic park

On a cold, snowy Christmas night in 1776, the Continental Army changed the course of history. Led by George Washington, they braved the rough Delaware River to land at Johnson's Ferry and march on to victory against the British. Today the site of their landing is preserved as a beautiful park, filled with trails and wildlife. Enjoy live theater, a museum, 18th century buildings and camping in this historic haven.

FAQs

  • What are the best activities at the park?

Each May, make your way to the Thompson-Neely House & Farmstead to take part in the annual sheep shearing event. Watch wooly sheep lose their winter coats and then try your hand at turning the fleece into yarn. Don't miss the annual Memorial Day Observance celebration, paying tribute to the birth of US independence at the gravesite of Continental soldiers.
  • What will I find in the village at the park?

The Taylorsville area of the park, also known as The Village, is home to historic buildings dating back to the late 1700s. Tour the McConkey Ferry Inn, an authentic Revolutionary era tavern and country inn. You will also find a blacksmith shop and several residential homes from that era. This is also the site of the annual re-enactment of George Washington's river crossing each December.
